In the renovated spaces of Kulosaaren yhteiskoulu, flooring materials play an important role in the overall look, comfort and acoustics of the interiors. The carpet tiles selected for the auditorium and classroom support the different functions of the spaces while becoming a natural part of their interior design.
The aim for the auditorium was to create a calm and practical environment suitable for versatile use as a learning space. Infloor Cantara MO 003 carpet tiles were selected for the flooring. With their understated, sisal-inspired appearance, the tiles provide a neutral foundation that complements the wooden surfaces and soft furnishings of the space.
Cantara’s felt backing improves the acoustics of the auditorium while making the tiered seating areas warm and comfortable, even when sitting for longer periods. Thanks to the LiftBAC installation system, the tiles remain securely in place while still being easy to lift and replace when needed. The edges of the tiered seating have been finished with profiles to keep the tiles securely in place and ensure a neat and durable result.
The classroom was designed to feel warm and calm while also introducing a touch of playfulness. BLOQ R-Evolution and Renegade carpet tiles were combined to turn the large floor surface into a prominent element of the interior.
The room’s original red brick wall served as the starting point for the flooring design. Warm rust and red tones in the floor continue the colour palette of the brickwork, while the lighter beige adds contrast and brings brightness to the space. The same light tones are repeated in the curtains. Combining different colours and patterns creates subtle zones within the floor and adds character to the otherwise calm learning environment.
The carpet tiles also contribute to the classroom’s acoustics, creating a softer and more comfortable atmosphere. Positive experiences with textile flooring previously installed in the school library made carpet tiles a natural choice for the classroom as well.
“The aim was to create a warm atmosphere and bring a sense of calm to the classroom. As the largest surface in the room, the floor plays an important visual and functional role, and carpet tiles also contribute to good acoustics. Our positive experience with the textile flooring in the library made it an easy choice for the classroom as well. It was great to have the opportunity to use the new BLOQ R-Evolution and Renegade carpet tiles, which brought just the right amount of playfulness to the space.”
